International Horticultural Expo 2023 Doha Qatar opens in the desert to inspire visitors towards a greener future

Expo 2023 Doha is the first Horticultural Expo in the desert. It will demonstrate the urgency to address climate change and provide solutions to the desertification of the Earth with its four topics: Modern Agriculture, Technology and Innovation, Environmental Awareness, and Sustainability.

His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, attended the opening ceremony of Expo 2023 Doha Qatar on Monday, 2 October 2023.

The International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) approved Expo 2023 Doha in 2017, and under Qatar’s National Vision 2030, the Expo is organised under the Ministry of Municipality.

His Highness The Amir was guest of honour at the formal opening of Expo 2023 Doha, which, for the next six months, until 28 March 2024, will demonstrate its theme of “Green Desert, Better Environment” to more than three million expected visitors from around the world.

His Excellency Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Prime Minister of the State of Qatar, was the first to address the audience of dignitaries. Praising the people involved and reinforcing the importance of the educational purpose of Expo 2023 Doha for the world.

Expo 2023 Doha spans 1.7 million square metres and takes place in the scenic Al Bidda Park, one of the biggest parks in Doha, offering breathtaking views of the Arabian Gulf.

More than 70 countries are participating with exquisitely landscaped gardens, providing visitors with an interactive experience with nature.

Mr Dimitri Kerkentzes, Secretary General of Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), followed the Qatari Prime Minister’s speech, declaring: “Today marks a significant milestone as the world gathers to plant the seeds of hope for a greener future for humanity and nature.”

After his speech, Mr Leonardo Capitanio, President of AIPH, exalted Expo Doha’s theme, “Green Desert, Better Environment,” stating: “The theme is timely, driving us to explore nature’s potential to transform arid landscapes. Horticulture nurtures life, fosters biodiversity, and mitigates climate change. It offers solutions to environmental challenges and embodies our responsibility to protect the planet.

He continues: “AIPH represents horticulture producers worldwide. Plants help maintain our connection with nature, improve air quality, reduce stress, and enhance well-being. This Expo showcases best practices, innovations, and horticulture and environmental sustainability breakthroughs. It is a platform for nations to share their success stories and aspirations for a greener, healthier planet. The gardens and exhibits you’ll explore testify to horticulture’s potential to shape our future.”

Mr Capitanio finished his speech by thanking His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, His Excellency Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Prime Minister of the State of Qatar, and His Excellency Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, Minister of Municipality and Environment, for their commitment to making this International Horticultural Expo in the desert a reality.
