The editor of Hungary’s leading horticultural trade publication, Klara Biza, has won a 2023 Silver Carnation Award.

Set against a backdrop of applause, Klara Biza  took to the stage at the 16th century Palazzo Biscari in Catania on Saturday 25 November 2023 to accept the award from industry veteran and horticultural jouranlist Arturo Croci.

Now in its 49th year, the Silver Carnation Awards recognise excellence and innovation in the field of business management, floriculture, journalism, public governance, and floral design. Biza, awarded in the International Journalism Category, was one of nine to receive Silver Carnation honours.

Biza, editor of Hungary’s leading horticultural trade publication Kertészet és Szölészet and former contributing writer for FCI magazine, received praise from the jury for having dedicated herself consistently to promoting and supporting ornamental horticulture in Hungary and abroad. Over the course of a distinguised career, she has defended the interests of the sector and enabled knowledge exchange.

Biza is the first woman from Eastern Europe to receive the prestigious prize.

Over past decades, more than 400 Garofano d’Argento awards have been presented to people who have made a significant contribution to the Italian and international flower industry. Among the horticultural award winners are Robert F. Zurel, Wim van Meeuwen, Jan Petiet, Pierre Barandou, Nancy Laws, Egon Galinnis, Jochen Henneke, Jaap Kras, Ron van der Ploeg, Nobel Prize winner Francesco Bruno Gnisci, Ester Nunziata, Marta Pizano, Alicia Namesny and Arturo Croci.

In the last few years, the Garofano d’Argento Awards have expanded beyond the floriculture sector. Today, award winners can also be found in other sectors of the economy.

As such, this year’s prize winners representing the horticulture industry, Klara Biza, Euroflora director Rino Surace, horticultural consultant, marketing expert, painter, writer and musician, Pier Paderni, and floral designer Rudy Casati, were humbled to receive the honour and be in the company of an illustrious group of 5 other prize winners in different categories. These included writer and musician Mauro Di Domenico, RAI journalist Giulia Capocchi, Santa Vaccaro, Secretary General of the umbrella organisation for the chambers of commerce in Sicily, Unioncamere Sicilia, Vicenta Pallarès Castelló, president of CIDAE, a Catalonia-based organisation that vindicates textile art and artisan tapestry locally and globally, Vicenzo Costa, managing director of  employer’s organisation Confcommercio Sicilia and Confcommercio Palermo, and Gianluca Manenti, president of the employer’s organisation Confcommercio Sicilia and Confcommercio Ragusa, Sicily’s horticultural heartland

The purpose of the horticultural category of the awards is to welcome industry professionals, from home and abroad, to Sicily to meet growers in person and give them a clear picture of the size, professionality and hospitality of the island’s ornamentals sector.

Founder, the late Carlo Calì, and the organising team truly deserve credit for helping Sicilian businesses to grow and promote the beauty of the island of Sicily.

The organisation of the awards continue in the hands of the aforementioned Associazione with Carlo’s daughter Carmelita as president and for whom it is a real honour to continue her father’s ground-breaking work.

More recently, ornamental horticulture in Sicily received a powerful boost when Sicily’s second-largest city, Catania, hosted the inaugural edition of the horticultural trade show Garden Days at the SiciliaFiera convention centre between 28-29 October.

Next year, Garden Days Sicily 2024 is set to take place between 25-27 October at SiciliaFiera.
