Ten horticulture packaging manufacturers and suppliers put their signatures to the new Horti Sustainable Packaging Initiative at Paardekooper’s Horti office on Tuesday, 4 July 2023.
Participants want to jointly accelerate sustainable packaging and thus make the floriculture sector more sustainable.
A year ago, Dutch Flower Group challenged the packaging companies to collaborate in supply chain transparency, certification, circularity, and life cycle assessments.
Greener packaging is also a way to anticipate existing or upcoming (EU) legislation. In the UK, for example, environmental taxes are already very high; in Germany, there is compulsory registration.
Commenting on the Horti Sustainable Packaging Initiative, Marcel Zandvliet, CMO/CSO of Dutch Flower Group, stressed the importance of further cooperation in the packaging sector to make a global impact on sustainability and standardisation.
Horti Sustainable Packaging Initiative participants include Dillewijn Zwapak; Broekhof Verpakkingen; DecoWraps; Koen Pack; Chrysal International; Modiform; Twinpack; Desch-Plantpak; JBB Pack; Floralife, and the private/public business platform Greenport Aalsmeer.
Gido Oude Kotte, chairman of Greenport Aalsmeer Foundation and mayor of Aalsmeer, also signed the agreement. He hopes participants will work with the Horti Sustainable Packaging Initiative on real innovations to give floriculture a sustainable future worldwide. In the coming period, the parties will start working on a plan of action, aiming to roll out various projects.
