Floridata/VGB half-yearly figures confirm sluggish performance by Dutch flower and plant exporters

Shipments of Dutch flowers and plants abroad had a difficult first half to the year, according to new figures released by the Dutch Association of Wholesalers in Floricultural Products (VGB) and market analyst Floridata.

The latest figures confirmed the sputtering exports of Dutch flowers and plant in the first half of the year, according to VGB director Matthijs Mesken, who is particularly worried about higher costs for labour, phytosanitary inspection and transportation. Exporters targeting the British and French markets in particular are experiecing upward pressure on costs.

The Floridata/VGB figures reveal that overall export revenues struggled in a sluggish ecomomy with Dutch global flower and plant exports worth €4 billion to the Dutch economy, but showing  a 4 per cent decline in the first six months of 2023.
The worst hit was the flower trade. It was down 4 per cent to €2.4 billion. Plant exports contracted by 2 per cent to €1.6 billion.
