Included in the Green City Conference programme was the long-awaited announcement of the 21 Finalists of the AIPH World Green City Awards 2024.
Prof. David Simon – Professor of Development Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London
Prof. David Simon is Professor of Development Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London, and was Director of Mistra Urban Futures from 2014 to 2019. Prof. Simon undertakes a full range of research, teaching and administration, as well as external societal engagement and impact work including expert advisory and consultancy activities. His research encompasses principally the interface between development and the environment, in the context of sustainability and global environmental/climate change, with particular reference to urban, peri-urban and regional change. He is author of ‘Sustainable Human Settlements within the Global Urban Agenda’ that was launched to coincide with the start of COP 28 in Dubai.
Kishor Rajhansa – Chief Operating Officer, Global Carbon Council
Kishor Rajhansa is a climate change, energy, and sustainability leader with a professional experience of 28 years in leadership positions in multi-national advisory, multilateral regulatory, and government organizations.
Currently, Kishor is working as Chief Operations Officer at Global Carbon Council, Doha, Qatar. He is primarily responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and operationalizing the Global Carbon Council, a CORSIA and ICROA-approved GHG Program. He has been the acting member of the expert panel responsible for climate mitigation standards of UNFCCC (CDM Methodologies Panel) since 2017, and the member on the roster of experts for methodologies and climate policy for Article 6.4 Supervisory Body of UNFCCC
Dr Ali Al Jassim – Chair of the Society of Sustainability & Green Materials (SSGM)
Dr. Ali Al Jassim is the Chairman of the Society of Sustainability & Green Materials. He Chaired Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC) and was Vice Chair for Green Buildings in the Mena & North Africa region.
Ali has 28 years of experience in leading roles in both public and private sectors delivering programs and projects, and has held top positions in both sectors. He led and worked with teams on iconic projects in the Emirate of Dubai and on the federal level in the UAE. Examples of these projects are Dubai metro, Noll card, Salik, 43 major roads infrastructure projects during 2006, enhancing & elevating drivers training and vehicle licensing services during 2008, unifying drivers licenses and vehicles ownership all over the UAE in 2008/2009, created and established 2 drivers training institutes (schools) in 2012 and 2017, led a government entity and managed a government owned company providing energy services and building retrofitting, worked on the 3 largest solar projects in the region and the World, Hatta villas solar rooftop (500 villas), a 21 MWh on a single roof, and 5000 villas solar roofs in Al Warqaa & Al Barsha in Dubai which was completed in 1 year. His visionary leadership led a team that helped make Dubai a leading city in the region in energy services and retrofit during 2018/2020.
Jala Makhzoumi – Vice President of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) and Acting President of IFLA Middle East
Jala Makhzoumi is Vice President of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) and acting president for IFLA Middle East. She adjunct professor of landscape architecture, American University of Beirut, and is co-founder of UNIT44, offering consultancies in architecture, landscape architecture, and ecological planning. In her research and practice, Jala pioneers a holistic approach that mediates community needs with ecosystem health, biodiversity protection and heritage conservation. Her professional expertise includes sustainable urban greening, post-disaster recovery and landscape heritage conservation. In 2019 Jala received the European Council of Landscape Architecture Schools (ECLAS) Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2021 the IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award 2021 for her outstanding contribution to education and practice.
Huda Shaka – Director of Urban Strategy and Planning, Gehl
Huda is a chartered urban planner and chartered environmentalist with over 16 years’ experience advising city authorities and real estate developers in the Gulf on sustainable development. She has had multiple roles in consulting and as an advisor in local government and has worked on a number of prestigious projects. Building on her unique multidisciplinary education and experience, Huda loves to shed light on the opportunities and synergies for liveable, resilient and sustainable cities.
Huda holds a Bachelor of Science from the American University of Beirut, a Master of Science from the University of California and a Master of Science in International Planning from University College London. Her work focuses on the intersection of sustainability, urban planning, and public health.
Prof Saeed Alhassan Alkhazraji, Founder, Manhat
Prof. Saeed is the first recipient of inaugural Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid award for Scientific Excellence in 2017. He holds BE, MSc and PhD in chemical engineering from Vanderbilt University, Colorado School of Mines and Case Western Reserve University, respectively. His research expertise is on colloids, nanomaterials, polymers and surface sciences. Prof. Saeed has published more than 142 journal articles, 2 book chapters, 87 conference papers and 16 patents and patent applications.
Prof. Saeed is founder of Manhat, a deep tech startup; focusing on technologies for sustainable water production inspired by nature. Manhat’s technologies have received several accolades including: Water Europe Innovation Award, Thought for Food Mena Challenge and Toward Net Zero Award from Arab Water Council.
Dr Mario V Balzan – Senior Lecturer at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST), and Director at Ecostack Innovations,
Dr Mario V Balzan is a Senior Lecturer at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST), and Managing Director at Ecostack Innovations. He was the Scientific Coordinator of the Horizon 2020 project ReNature which aims to promote research and innovation excellence in nature-based solutions, and currently participates in multiple Horizon Europe funded projects on biodiversity assessment and nature-based solutions. He has over the past decade acted as scientific expert for the European Commission and national authorities in projects that assess and model biodiversity and ecosystem services, coordinated a regional assessment on the current state of ecosystems and the risks associated with climatic and environmental change in the Mediterranean, and acted as scientific expert on several environmental issues and sustainable development topics.
Diane Lee, Media Relations Manager – Asia Region, AIPH
Since 2016, Diane has been an active member of the Korean chapter of the AIPH, contributing to the successful hosting of AIPH expositions in Korea. With her academic background in Landscape Architecture, Diane emphasises the importance of creating sustainable urban environments for a greener future. She is particularly interested in exploring how horticultural expos can align with sustainable urban development.
Thomas Gooch, Founder/CEO of Office of Planetary Observations (OPO)
Thomas Gooch has 20 years experience working in Landscape Architecture across policy, design, construction and maintenance.
OPO is on a mission to green the worlds 10,000 cities by making easily accessible greening data to city makers for measuring, monitoring, planning and reporting on greening initiatives. We do this by fusing city planning expertise with satellite remote sensing for providing tree canopy, urban heat island and tree planting metrics, insights and actions.
