Sustainability at the Heart of Expo 2027 Yokohama, Japan (GREEN×EXPO 2027)

As planning progresses for Japan’s next A1 International Horticultural Exhibition, Expo 2027 Yokohama is laying the foundations for a sustainable, inclusive, and globally aligned event. Guided by the theme “Scenery of the Future for Happiness,” the Expo’s Sustainability Strategy aligns with AIPH’s requirements while also reflecting Japan’s unique cultural, ecological, and urban context.

Branded as GREEN×EXPO 2027, the international horticultural exhibition will express its environmental vision through all aspects of design and delivery—from green infrastructure to public engagement. The Japan Association for the International Horticultural Expo 2027 finalised the Sustainability Strategy in March 2024, building on international frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

A Strategy Rooted in Global Principles and Local Action

The Strategy sets out five overarching goals—Climate Action, Biodiversity Conservation, Sustainable Sourcing and Resource Management, Equity & Inclusion, and Education & Awareness Raising—supported by 12 objectives and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These address areas such as renewable energy adoption, circular architecture, transport access, legacy planning, and waste reduction.

From Green Infrastructure to GREEN Circular Architecture

The site in Kamiseya, Yokohama, is undergoing a dramatic transformation from a former military zone into a green innovation district. The Expo’s Sustainability Strategy embraces “GREEN Circular Architecture”—temporary structures designed for disassembly, reuse, and minimal environmental impact. Japanese-sourced wood, modular components, and passive design strategies will be used to reduce the emissions associated with material sourcing and enhance the visitor experience through thoughtful architectural design.

To promote nature-positive development, the site plan incorporates green corridors, preserved vegetation, and local biodiversity. The focus is not only on protection but on creating immersive, educational experiences within living landscapes.

Human-Centred and Planet-Aligned

The Expo’s Sustainability Strategy also commits to upholding international standards on human rights, labour, and anti-corruption. Through inclusive hiring, universal design, and a sustainable procurement code, Expo 2027 Yokohama (GREENxEXPO 2027) is being shaped around the principles of accessibility, transparency, and fairness.

A robust sustainability governance model is in place. An Event Sustainability Management System aligned with ISO 20121 is being developed. Exhibitors and contractors will be required to meet environmental and social standards outlined in the Expo’s Procurement Code, which draws on lessons from Tokyo 2020 and Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, Japan.

A Living Platform for Horticultural Transformation

True to AIPH’s values, the Japan Association for the International Horticultural Expo 2027 conceives GREEN×EXPO 2027 as a platform for transformation, not just a showcase. Public awareness campaigns, education programmes, and curated exhibits will highlight climate resilience, smart farming, and urban greening.

The five thematic villages—Farm & Food, SATOYAMA, Urban GX, Craft, and Kids—will each demonstrate sustainable living through applied horticultural design. Meanwhile, the Horticultural Pavilion and the National Government Exhibition will explore the evolution of Japan’s horticulture, from flower gardens to next-generation planting systems.

With a clear policy framework, cross-ministerial collaboration, and construction already underway, Expo 2027 Yokohama (GREENxEXPO 2027) is not only meeting AIPH’s sustainability expectations—it is also setting a new benchmark for future international horticultural exhibitions.

The Japan Association for the International Horticultural Expo 2027 will present its progress report for Expo 2027 Yokohama (GREENxEXPO 2027) at the 77th AIPH Annual Congress in Belgium in September.
