Since receiving AIPH approval in March 2024, preparations for the Nakhon Ratchasima International Horticultural Expo 2029 (A1) have been intensifying. On 27 November, the AIPH Expo Committee visited Thailand for a site inspection, engaging with key members of the Expo organisation to ensure preparations align with AIPH regulations. Their inspection showcased impressive strides in sustainable infrastructure and community-driven initiatives, setting the stage for the International Horticultural Expo in 2029, poised to deliver enduring benefits for Thailand and the region.
Site Visits and Stakeholder Meetings
The AIPH Expo Committee, including Secretary General Tim Briercliffe, AIPH Expo Committee Chair Mr Takuhiro Yamada, Vice President Dr Holly Peng, Board Member Karen Tambayong, former Expo Committee Chair Kevin Chung, and International Relations Manager Elena Terekhova, met with key stakeholders to review progress and provide guidance on operational planning.
The delegation visited Korat Province and engaged with key figures central to the Expo Organisers’ structure. Mr Rapibhat Chandarasrivongs, Director General of the Department of Agriculture, provided strategic direction on agricultural planning and coordination. Dr Wilawan Kraikruan, Deputy Director General of the Department of Agriculture, shared insights on aligning Expo objectives with national agricultural policies. Ms Parichart Potchanasin, an agricultural scientist at the Horticultural Research Institute, contributed expertise on horticultural innovations critical to the Expo’s themes. Discussions covered critical topics, including land use, water resource project development, and infrastructure plans to support Expo visitors.


Insights from Provincial and Regional Experts
Plans for key initiatives, including enhanced health services, sustainable energy solutions, upgraded tourism facilities, and road expansions, are underway. Active collaboration with the regional Chamber of Commerce aims to foster community awareness and engagement, ensuring that the Expo delivers long-term advantages for visitors, the Korat community, and the broader region.
During discussions, Mr Chaiwat Chuenkosum, Governor of Nakhon Ratchasima Province, provided an overview of the provincial government’s policy initiatives. His presentation included plans for plant nurseries managed by the Nonsung Agricultural Research and Development Centre, demonstrating the region’s commitment to supporting the Expo’s agricultural focus. Dr Weerapong Prasongchean, a lecturer at the Rajamangala University of Technology Isan, highlighted Korat’s vision for a Green City. His talk focused on sustainable transportation initiatives, including a High-Speed Train project linking Bangkok to the Expo site.
Mr Sukon Temyotying, Director of Irrigation Engineering at the Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Irrigation Office, addressed water resource development. His insights included plans for sustainable irrigation systems vital to the Expo’s infrastructure.
Mrs Thidarat Rodanont, Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries in Nakhon Ratchasima, showcased Korat’s high-value agricultural achievements. Horticultural highlights include Orchid cultivation and Damask Rose production in Pak Chong District and chrysanthemum farming in Wang Nam Khiao District.
The benefits for the community were also prioritised. Assistant Professor Dr Nattinee Thongdee, Director of the Northeastern Institute of Petrified Wood and Mineral Resources, introduced plans for an Expo Academy to encourage local participation and establish vocational courses supporting the Expo. A detailed analysis of the benefits to people, focusing on horticulture, agriculture, visitor management, and local community involvement, was also presented.
Mr Sudtheerak Phansaichua, Chairman of the Nakhon Ratchasima Chamber of Commerce, outlined public awareness and engagement strategies, highlighting the importance of preparing the local community ahead of the Expo. Meanwhile, Mrs Rungtip Bookkhuntod, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Nakhon Ratchasima Office, detailed initiatives to enhance the region’s tourism appeal, emphasising a“4F” strategy of Food, Fossils, Fresh and Festivals.


Invitation Plan and Expo Timeline
Expo 2029 Korat is set to run from 10 November 2029 to 28 February 2030, spanning 110 days and attracting an estimated four million visitors. With over 30 countries expected to participate, the invitation plan involves government and non-government entities. Invitations will be issued in early 2026, paving the way for international garden operations to begin in 2028. The total Expo site area spans 109 hectares, with 84 hectares dedicated to exhibition spaces. Landscape planting and design layout will be implemented in 2025 as part of the operational planning efforts.
The Expo’s theme, “Nature and Greenery: Envisioning the Green Future,” will highlight Thailand’s natural marvels, cultural diversity, and expertise in sustainable horticultural and agricultural technologies. Sub-themes include “Rewilding: Back to Earth,” “Food Sustainability: Nurtured by Nature,” and “Urbanisation Among Greenery: Reimagining the Blueprint of Urban Life.”
The journey toward the launch of Expo 2029 Korat is set to maintain strong momentum, with each phase carefully building the foundation for a remarkable International Horticultural Expo that will showcase Thailand’s leadership in horticulture, sustainability, and cultural heritage. For now, the preparations are generating growing enthusiasm as local and international stakeholders anticipate this Expo’s profound impact on the region and beyond.
