Work productivity
Green in plain sight is best for increased productivity. A view of nature has a calming effect. It creates a pleasant atmosphere during formal and informal meetings. We are more problem-solving amongst greenery, which contributes to effective meetings.
Creative tasks in particular are carried out better in a green environment. This is an important advantage in today’s society in which innovation is increasingly valued. Green meeting places in an outdoor space are very suitable for this.
Green view
Green views help the eyes relax and refocus. Green views counteract fatigue and headaches. This is important when we sit in front of a screen for hours. A view of nature has a calming effect.
In VDU (video display unit) workers, an improved reaction time of up to 12% has been measured for computer tasks undertaken in a green environment. Another study showed that with a forty-second viewing pause on a green roof versus a black roof, those with a view of a green roof made fewer mistakes in computer tasks.
Walking interlude
Greenery invites people to move and meet more and thus contributes to a more productive working environment. Design an attractive and accessible outdoor space at companies and institutions, which employees and visitors can use for a (short) walk. An attractive green outdoor space in the neighbourhood lends itself particularly well to walking meetings, bringing the additional effect of greater creativity.
After a (break) walk in a safe green environment, we are better able to concentrate.
In addition to lunchtime walks, green outdoor spaces in the vicinity offers opportunities for sports, yoga, and meditation during breaks or just before or after work.
Or perhaps gardening in a communal vegetable or flower garden. What makes us relax and move has a positive effect on our productivity.
A beautiful green route can tempt employees to commute to the office (partly) on foot or by bike. Ensure that design and plant selection encourage walking and cycling and, in particular, include cycling storage and changing facilities
Job satisfaction
The presence of a green outdoor space that employees can use during breaks contributes to greater satisfaction with the workplace. It is an opportunity to demonstrate a commitment to good employment practices and is an instrument to attract and retain good and motivated staff.
Shared greenery
We can design for greening around commercial and municipal real estate to be more accessible and add value to the city by making some parts public and opening gates regularly. In many places, schoolyards are being made greener. By also (partially) making these public, we create more challenging green play and learning spaces in a neighbourhood.
Shared greenery offers space for companies, educational and healthcare institutions, and residents to start and/or manage a green initiative together. In these collaborations, we learn from each other and share knowledge in making the city greener.
Learning performance
A green schoolyard and green space around it go hand in hand with better cognitive development (working memory and ability to concentrate). Experience shows that it is important that the greenery is not just a ‘bare’ grassy area, but a complex environment with a view of trees and shrubs.
Exploratory play in a challenging, well-designed green environment has a positive effect on children’s development and creativity. They learn to use all their senses and to play together, and a proven reduction in bullying has been noticed.
A green outdoor space can be a learning environment and provide teaching materials all in one.
If students have to take a difficult, attention-demanding test, they can do it faster in a green environment in or near the school than in the classroom.
