The Dutch Association of Wholesalers in Floricultural Products (VGB), in collaboration with leading trading companies, has unveiled a roadmap towards 100% certified sourcing in floriculture.
In March 2025, Dutch Flower Group (DFG), FM Group, Van der Plas Group, and Royal Lemkes—acting as Accelerators within the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI)—presented their collective commitment. Now, VGB is calling on all members to join the transition actively.
This phased approach ensures growers and traders are aligned as certification becomes the backbone of supply chain transparency.
To ensure inclusivity, a special scheme for small-scale growers (annual floriculture turnover under €250,000) has been developed in collaboration with certification schemes and FSI. It will be issued via MPS and will soon be available via Agraya GmbH (GLOBALG.A.P.).
A transparent supply chain secured through certification is vital for the sector’s reputation in both domestic and international markets. Certified products are increasingly demanded by major retailers, including supermarkets, garden centres, florists, and DIY chains.
Beyond market demand, certified sourcing also provides evidence to meet tightening regulatory obligations, including the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).
“Certified sourcing is the foundation for transparency, market access, and future-proofing our industry,” VGB stated, emphasising that the roadmap relies on cooperation across trading houses, growers, and industry organisations under the umbrella of FSI.
By taking these steps, the floriculture sector is signalling its readiness to meet rising sustainability demands with demonstrably responsibly produced products.
