‘Tour de Flora’ Marks a Vibrant Start to the Tour de France Femmes

Straight after the Olympics’ Closing Ceremony in Paris, on Monday, August 12, Rotterdam proudly hosted the start of the 2024 Tour de France Femmes, introducing a thrilling time trial that captivated cycling enthusiasts worldwide. This year’s edition uniquely merged the dynamism of professional cycling with the tranquil beauty of local horticulture, highlighting the Dutch proficiency in both arenas.

The race began with a demanding time trial in Rotterdam, followed by a picturesque journey to The Hague. A special highlight was the route’s passage through Westland – the greenhouse capital of the Netherlands. This area is not just a hub for cycling but also for horticulture, making it a fitting backdrop for an event that celebrates exceptional talent in women’s cycling.

In celebration of the event, Piet Vijverberg Nursery, a 75-year-old nursery in the local community known for its exquisite phalaenopsis and Dracaena, created a vibrant plant mosaic. See the video showing the moment the cyclists sped by. The mosaic paid homage to the spirit and determination of the female athletes competing. As the competitors pedalled past, they were greeted with a living tribute that illustrated the community’s pride and the race’s broader cultural significance.

This blend of horticulture and cycling could very well be termed “Tour de Flora,” symbolising a ride through nature’s beauty, much like the cyclists’ journey through the scenic routes of the Tour de France Femmes.
