Floristry professionals, academics, researchers, and environmental auditors will gather in Coventry Cathedral on 26 September to witness the launch of a guidance booklet for florists on sustainable practices. The aim is to cut down on plastics and packaging and better management among UK florists.
The booklet is the outcome of a working group set up a year ago across the UK industry to make progress on these environmental issues. The group is aligned to FSI. Interflora are involved as well as MPS. There will be demonstrations of sustainable floral displays and a panel discussion.
The cut flower industry uses a lot of packaging. Between grower and the final delivery of a bouquet, flowers may be packaged several times. Plastic sleeves, containers, gift wrapping, ribbons and floral foam are all widely used by florists, to protect and enhance their product and keep flowers hydrated.
Single use packaging, and plastic waste in particular, has become a concern in the global environment. A group of customers are increasingly aware of environmental issues and want to buy from businesses that are acting responsibly. Tackling waste is one of the most important ways businesses can begin to address environmental issues, and it makes good business sense to look for ways to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
The purpose of the event is to launch a booklet and other resources which provide guidance on managing plastics, packaging and waste issues within the UK floriculture Sector.
The event will also offer the opportunity to establish the next steps for the Plastics Packaging and Waste working group which has been convened by Coventry and Surrey Universities.
