The Netherlands prominently present at the Kunming Flower Expo China

Arguably, China’s best-known province for European cut flower professionals is Yunnan, with Kunming being a hotbed for production. This picture was taken in the Kunming Garden at the recently held Expo 2024 Chengdu.

The Kunming Flower Expo, held between 20-22 September 2024, brought together floriculture enthusiasts and professionals from around the world. The event highlighted the diversity and creativity within the industry, offering an engaging platform for innovation and collaboration.

Floriculture was the focus of the Netherlands’ pavilion with 22 companies showcasing their latest products and services.

The Dutch ambassador to China Mr André Haspels opened the 900m2 pavilion on the opening day of the show. Inside trade show goers saw an impressive range of flowers, plants, technologies, and sustainable solutions from Dutch breeders and companies.

The Embassy booth, designed by LVVN China, embraced sustainability through digital booklets, reusable stands made from paper origami, and dissolvable paper table banners containing seeds. Each element reflected the Netherlands’ commitment to innovation and eco consciousness in floriculture.

An absolute highlight was the floral design show with Dutch florist Pieter Teisman incorporating the newest flowers in his floral masterpieces.

A Netherlands Masterclass presented the Dutch expertise and practices in floricultural technology. Four presentations were given by technical experts from Dutch companies and focused on various topics, including climate and energy management, tips for growing on substrates, plant nutrition, and biological disease and pest control. The knowledge sharing brought Dutch solutions to growers and users, by discussing effective methods for flower farms.

The event also fostered networking and collaboration. Professionals from the Netherlands and China exchanged ideas and explored opportunities for partnership during the network dinner.

Looking ahead, ornamental horticulture in China continues to evolve, with increasing interest in unique designs, advanced technologies for production and transport, and sustainable practices. The Netherlands remains a key player in this vibrant sector, as demonstrated at the Kunming Flower Expo.
