Sjaak van Schie B.V. opens new cold store at Pegões production site

More than 200 employees, business partners, and customers of Hydrangea grower Sjaak van Schie celebrated the opening of the company’s new cold store in Pegões, Portugal, with a quintessentially Portuguese lunch on Friday, 21 October.

During the diverse programme, guided site tours informed visitors about the new cold storage facilities.

The  9,600m² building, of which 6,800m² cold store rooms, is located at Strada Nacional in St Isidro de Pegões and will be used to store half-finished Hydrangeas and cuttings at a temperature range between 0 to 6 degrees Celcius. The building features the latest techniques in smart cooling with a clear focus on sustainability, efficiency, hygiene and energy reduction.

During an afternoon “Meet & Greet” session, the visitors had the chance to catch up with colleagues from the sector over a drink and a snack.

Sjaak van Schie is delighted that the facility is fully operational. “Now that we have a wholly owned cold storage for the temporary conditioning of cuttings and plants, we no longer need to hire extra cold store space. The new facility will allow us to work more efficiently while reducing on costs and tranport movements.”

MPS-certified Sjaak van Schie B.V. runs plant nurseries in the Netherlands and Portugal. In Maasdijk, Netherlands, the company produces around 3 million Hydrangeas in the open. The 30-ha site in Portugal serves as a cutting farm and production location for half-finished and finished plants.

Earlier this year, the plant nursery revealed a new brand identity, cool new varieties, and marketing concepts marking the start of the 2022 Hydrangea season.

The new cold storage was officially opened by grower and company owner Sjaak van Schie who used giant scissors to cut the ribbon.
