Preparations have begun in the Dutch city of Zundert to welcome Queen Máxima of the Netherlands on Friday afternoon, 30 August, to inspect the ‘construction site’ of the 82nd Zundert Flower Parade.

The Queen will tour the neighbourhoods of Helpt Elkander, De Berk and Klein Zundert, where she will see 20 towering floats under construction. This year marks the 82nd edition of what is arguably one of the world’s most spectacular Dahlia festivals.

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands opens the World Horti Center in Naaldwijk on 7 March 2018.

The Queen will tour the site and meet the many volunteers behind the event, which first emerged in 1936 to mark the birthday of the then-Queen Wilhelmina.

True to tradition, the annual Flower Parade Zundert will roll down the streets of Zundert on the first Sunday of September every year. At night and the day after, the floats are lined up on the outskirts of Zundert for free public viewing.

Every year, the floral extravaganza is brought to life by the creativity, passion and sense of community the approximately 7,000 volunteers show.

The Queen will make her way along the different floats with volunteers explaining all the ins and outs of the event’s history and its role within the community, where the parade acts as a binding glue between generations.

All floats will be lavishly decorated with Dahlia blooms in a rainbow of colours.
The Queen will assist the volunteers in attaching the flowers —mostly locally grown—to the impressive structures, which are sometimes more than 9 metres tall.

In the Netherlands, an estimated 75,000 volunteers are actively involved in the parades, aka corsos in Dutch. Corso events in the past have attracted more than 1,500,000 visitors from the Netherlands and abroad every year. An estimated 2,000,000 viewers watch live broadcasts.

In 2022, Dutch corsos have been added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH).

The Zundert Flower Parade will roll through the streets of Zundert on Sunday, 1 September. The next day, the floats will be lined up at the site of the CLTV building in Zundert.
