Paardekooper launches flower sleeves made from 70 per cent post consumer recycled content

Dutch based horticulture packaging manufacturer and supplier Paardekooper has made a significant step towards sustainability by transitioning from virgin OPP flower sleeves to Recy Clear rOPP , a material made from 70 per cent post-consumer recycled content.

The Recy Clear rOPP sleeves are the latest addition to Paardekooper’s comprehensive floral packaging line.

Compared to standard OPP sleeves, Recy Clear offers a markedly reduced environmental impact.

Paardekooper’s independent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) center has conducted thorough, peer-reviewed studies to demonstrate the substantial benefits of these new sleeves. Additionally, the company holds Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certifications, ensuring the authenticity of the recycled materials used.

John van Berkel, business development manager flexibles, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “With Recy Clear, we are clearly the front runner in our industry. The material is crystal clear, we have all the necessary certificates and the necessary LCA calculations to share a much better product on the market. We have such confidence in this product that we have committed to making it our business standard.”

The decision to replace OPP with Recy Clear rOPP sleeves is part of Paardekooper’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. This transition not only aligns with the company’s environmental goals but also reflects its dedication to setting industry standards.

By producing Recy Clear at various locations worldwide, including the company’s factory in Kenya and the new factory in Kosovo, Paardekooper reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation, further enhancing the sustainability of their products.

Moreover, Paardekooper has updated the design of some of their sleeves with Terra specifications, making them suitable for use on Terra Packing machines and approximately one inch shorter. This modification conserves material, enhances sustainability, and improves profitability. Despite initial customer hesitations about the new standard sizes, extensive testing has confirmed the efficacy and benefits of this design change.

As part of the Royal Dutch Paardekooper Group, Terra International sleeve-packing machines are integral to the sleeve packaging process. These machines have been rigorously tested to ensure they comply with the new rOPP specifications and design. This ensures seamless integration and superior performance across all packaging operations.

Paardekooper is now phasing out its inventory of virgin OPP sleeves. Most new orders will be fulfilled with the new Recy Clear rOPP sleeves, reinforcing the company’s commitment to offering the most sustainable floral packaging options available.
