Netherlands, Kazakhstan to intensify greenhouse cooperation

WESTLAND, Netherlands: The Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Askar Mamin, recently visited the World Horti Centre in Westland, Netherlands to learn more about Dutch greenhouse production, meet greenhouse building and horticultural engineering companies and hear about cutting-edge greenhouse technology. Subsequently, Dutch Prime Minister Rutte and Mr Mamin put their signatures to a strategic cooperation agreement in The Hague which will see the two countries work together to build a 200 ha greenhouse complex in Kazakhstan’s southernmost region Turkistan.

World Horti Centre’s newly-appointed managing director Joep Hendricks and Westland’s mayor Bouke Arends welcomed the Prime Minister and highlighted the world-leading capabilities the Netherlands has to offer to Kazakhstan’s horticulture sector.

Accompanied by the country’s minister of agriculture Omarov Saparkhan and trade minister Bakhyt Sultano, Mr Mamin was explained how Dutch greenhouse technology offers a range of opportunities for Kazakh companies including energy efficiency, food safety, sustainability and local-for-local.

Following his visit to Westland, Mr Mamin returned to the Hague to attend the opening of the 5th Kazakhstan-Netherlands Business Forum during which he and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte put their signatures to a business agreement which will significantly increase the presence of Dutch style state-of-the art greenhouse structures in the country’s southernmost region Turkistan. The Netherlands’ business consortium Dutch Greenhouse Delta sealed a deal with Dal Agro Park, marking the official launch of 200 ha of greenhouses.

Kazakhstan, the world’s largest landlocked country, offers a host of opportunities for Dutch greenhouse horticulture companies. The Kazakh government wants to improve its business environment, and is striving to develop the horticulture sector by replacing imports of agricultural products with locally grown produce. This fuels demand for knowledge, technology and collaboration with Dutch companies in the greenhouse horticulture sector.

Dutch Greenhouse Delta is the name that has been chosen to represent a consortium incorporating Certhon, Bom Group, Kubo and Priva and aims to strengthen the industry’s global presence by creating large scale greenhouse projects in metropolitan clusters around the world. As more of the world’s population resides in urban areas, ‘city farming’ can be a sustainable solution to feed and ‘flower’ the emerging megacities.
