Each year, Mediterranean plant nursery Vivai Capitanio and Italy’s National Association of Nursery Stock Exporters (ANVE) invest in graduate students and the research shaping the future of the sector. The annual Stefano Capitanio Graduating Awards recognise top-achieving horticultural students and encourage them to continue their studies.
The awards honour the memory of Stefano Capitanio, ANVE’s late co-founder and vice-president, who passed away in 2008 at a young age. A visionary plantsman, he advocated creating new markets by introducing lesser-known Mediterranean plant species.
To be considered, applicants must have completed their bachelor’s or master’s degree in the academic year 2024/25. Applications close on 30 April 2026.
The organisers encourage applicants to focus on topics relevant to the nursery stock industry, including socio-economic aspects, plant health, landscaping trends, European legislation, regeneration of former industrial areas, and risk management in nursery production.
Applicants will be assessed by a panel of judges representing a cross-section of the industry.
Particular attention is given to plant health challenges such as Xylella fastidiosa, Popillia japonica, Anoplophora chinensis, Phytophthora species, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, Halyomorpha halys, and Aromia bungii, reflecting ongoing concerns for growers and exporters.
The best Bachelor’s Thesis, Master’s Thesis or Specialist Thesis will be awarded a prize of €1,000 and €2,000, respectively.
Applications for the 2026 Stefano Capitanio Graduating Awards close on 30 April.
Applicants will be notified on 30 May 2026 during the XVIII National Day of the Mediterranean Nursery Stock Industry, held at Vivai Capitanio in Monopoli.
This year’s awards also mark ANVE’s 20th anniversary, highlighting the association’s long-standing emphasis on education and knowledge sharing within the sector.
