ISHS announces International Symposium on Irrigation of Horticultural Crops

The International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) and the DiCEM/ University of Basilicata are organising the IX International Symposium on Irrigation of Horticultural Crops, that will be held in Matera (Italy) from 17 to 20 June 2019.

Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region, perfectly adapted to its terrain and ecosystem. Basilicata and neighboring regions of Southern Italy boast many other beautiful and interesting sites for a relaxing vacation and/or cultural tourism.

Matera is 2019’s European capital of culture for Italy. Many tourists from all over the world are expected to visit the city and enjoy many programmes of cultural events. Hence, we strongly suggest you to book your accommodation widely in advance.

Today the competition for scarce water resources in many places at global level is intense. Available water resources are constantly diminishing at increasing rates. Adaptation of agriculture to varying conditions induced by climate change is necessary because some changes in climate can no longer be prevented.

During the four days of the congress, scientists from different countries will review current research trends on the irrigation of horticultural plants, will present new discoveries and make plans for future research and special projects.

The preliminary programme will be published shortly; it will include plenary lectures, oral and poster presentations. In addition, there will be specialised field excursions, technical workshops, programmes for accompanying persons and a social event.

Contributions are expected to cover a wide range of research fields including:

  • Sustainable approaches to irrigation management;
  • DSS (Decision Support Systems)
  • Plant water status and fruit quality
  • Irrigation management under arid and semi-arid conditions
  • Water use efficiency
  • Social and economic aspects

The Call for Papers is available online www.irrigationmatera2019.com and will be issued in all ISHS media.
