You will also be able to find out more about horticultural innovations that can make cities greener at this AIPH-Approved A1 World Horticultural Expo.

Growing Green Cities

Floriade Expo 2022’s theme is all about making cities more fun, liveable and sustainable. Horticulture plays an important role in this. A large proportion of our food originates here and demand for food is rising globally due to population growth. Innovations can contribute to meeting rising demand in a sustainable manner. Horticulture also provides greenery for urbanised areas in the shape of trees, plants and flowers. The Expo will highlight wonderful examples of horticultural innovations in the fields of urban greenery, food production, health and energy.

Discover The Green House

One of those examples at the Floriade-park is the 10,000 m² The Green House. Exploring this enormous greenhouse provides a fascinating journey through horticulture. There you will be able to view in detail the sustainable cultivation of all manner of crops as well as how they end up on your plate as a meal. At the technological innovation exhibition, you will be able to discover new techniques employed in the greenhouse sector such as glass with a variety of coatings for permitting the ingress of specific quantities of light. There will be much to see, but your other senses will also be stimulated. At the Kasrestaurant [greenhouse restaurant] you will be able to taste dishes made with products from the greenhouse. There will be inspiring workshops and you will be surrounded by greenery at the experiential greenhouses.

Outdoor fun at the Expo

There will also be plenty to see and experience outside the greenhouse at Floriade. The Netherlands is the world’s second-largest horticultural exporter and this will be reflected by the very varied substantiation of the Expo. Spread out across the various parts of the park, flower bulbs, plants and fruit growers, tree nurseries and vegetable growers from around the country will spotlight their best, tastiest products. You will be able to employ all your senses at the Zintuigentuin [Garden of senses] and can taste regional fruit at the Flevoland fruit garden. You should definitely also check out the arboretum, a huge collection of sustainable trees, plants and flowers planted in alphabetical order that all contribute to a healthy, green city.

Smart innovations

Sustainability is of paramount importance for everything taking place at the Expo. Think, for example, of the smart utilisation of waste. The Weerwatereiland [island] features a structure, 75% of which was built from bell pepper stalks. You will also be able to visit a practical example of agroforestry in which rows of trees and shrubs alternate with rows of, for instance, potatoes, grains and carrots instead of your standard monocultural field. Combinations with livestock farming are also an option. Smart combinations lead to higher yields per plot as well as make agriculture more resilient against extreme weather conditions. Be surprised by this type of innovation and experience all horticulture’s facets at Floriade Expo 2022 starting on 14 April 2022.
