Dwarf Hydrangea paniculata Bloomulus to debut at forthcoming IPM Essen show

Bloomulus is a new series comprising varieties of dwarf Hydrangea paniculata.

Kötterheinrich Hortensienkulturen from Lengerich in association with the Dutch/German Hydrangea Breeders Association (HBA) will launch dwarf Hydrangea paniculata Bloomulus – aka the Cloud Hydrangea- at the forthcoming IPM Essen show.

Jürgen Gerdvordermark, sales manager at Kötterheinrich Hortensienkulturen), a Hydrangea grower in Lengerich (40m north of Münster) explains that from the very onset the breeding programme focused on creating “the most compact series of Hydrangea paniculata on the market. Through innovative breeding techniques, we have been able to achieve a particularly compact plant habit, excellent branching and exceptionally large flower heads.”

Compact plant habit

The company claims that Bloomulus is the first Hydrangea paniculata series that can be produced and marketed in full flower in 14-cm pots.

Even at this pot size, the plants will produce between four and seven attractive flower heads,  reminiscent of cumulus clouds.

Bloomulus make ideal plants for smaller outdoor spaces such as patios, window boxes or balconies.

Easiness in production

Given the compact plant habit and the sturdy stems, there is no need for staking with these varieties. Next to easiness there’s also earliness as Bloomulus flowers from May onwards making it an attactive plant for early summer sales.

The Bloomulus series comprises seven varieties.

The 14-cm pot size allows for large-scale sales through large-scale retailers – but Bloomulus partners also produce these varieties in 18-cm and 23-cm branded containers for the higher end of the market.

Jürgen Gerdvordermark and his team will be presenting this novel series to production nurseries and retailers in the next few weeks and months.
