Now in its second generation of family ownership, Maasdijk-based Beekenkamp Group has emerged from humble beginnings to become a global leader in young plants and horticultural innovation. The conglomerate of companies is active in more than 45 countries and branches in Europe, Africa, North and South America, and Asia.
The Beekenkamp family has deep roots in horticulture. In 1951, Govert Beekenkamp established himself as a small-scale vegetable plant grower. His vision and entrepreneurship laid the foundation for a versatile and innovative company within global horticulture. Today, Beekenkamp Group comprises Beekenkamp Vegetables, Beekenkamp Ornamentals, Beekenkamp Verpakkingen (packaging), and chrysanthemum breeding and propagation specialist Deliflor Chrysanten.
Growth has been driven by a combination of strategic acquisitions and international expansion. Strategic partnerships and acquisitions include Leen de Mos Tropica, Fred Blokker, Novaplant, Deltastek, Brabantstek and Florema. Since the 1980s, the company ramped up its growth profile with the acquisition of Lyraflor, the establishment of Beekenkamp Verpakkingen, and the cuttings farms in Uganda, Ethiopia and Kenya.
Alongside expansion, the company has invested in automation and propagation technologies. Early adoption of transplanting robotics, particularly within Deliflor, points to the increasing role of technology in improving efficiency and consistency in young plant production.
More recent developments include new production locations in Kenya, Colombia and Japan, as well as investment in a dedicated R&D centre in Maasdijk and a specialised rooting facility in Nieuwaal. These investments underline the importance of innovation and genetics in maintaining competitive advantage within the young plant sector.
Today, the company employs 2,900 staff and operates from 95ha of greenhouses with an annual output of 2 billion starter plants.
Commenting on the milestone, An Beekenkamp, who since 2000 co-owns the business with her sister Margriet, said the anniversary reflects both continuity and change within the business.
“This anniversary is a tribute to our employees and to our loyal customers. Our people are the heart of the company; their craftsmanship and commitment have brought us to where we are today. Equally important are the customers who have placed their trust in us for many years and with whom we continue to grow and innovate.”
Beekenkamp will mark the anniversary during FlowerTrials 2026 in the Netherlands, alongside internal celebrations with employees later in the year.
