Dutch horticulture is taking centre stage in Japan this week as a delegation led by Dutch Greenhouse Delta, the Municipality of Westland, and the Netherlands Embassy in Japan embarks on a horticulture mission during Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai (30 August–6 September).

Extensive greenhouse complexes in Japan’s rural regions highlight the potential for Controlled Environment Agriculture to boost local production.
The programme’s flagship event is the CEA Symposium, where leading Dutch and Japanese voices meet to exchange ideas on the future of Controlled Environment Agriculture. Keynotes from former NASA scientist Raymond Wheeler, Dutch Vice-Minister for Agriculture Marten van den Berg, and Westland Mayor Bouke Arends set the stage for in-depth discussions on decarbonisation, robotics, and agri valleys. The renewal of Westland’s partnership with Kochi Prefecture underlines the long-standing ties between the two horticultural regions.
Delegates will also visit advanced greenhouses and plant factories in Ibaraki, Mie, Aichi, and Shizuoka prefectures, gaining first-hand insights into Japan’s horticultural landscape and identifying opportunities for collaboration in technology adoption, sustainability, and skills development.
The Netherlands Pavilion at Expo Osaka Kansai, built as a fully circular structure, reinforces the theme of “Common Ground.” Alongside water, food, and energy, it highlights horticulture’s role in building resilient, future-proof systems.

Growers at Ohara Farm in Kochi Prefecture discuss sustainable growing practices with Dutch horticultural specialists.
By placing Controlled Environment Agriculture at the centre of its mission, the Netherlands demonstrates how growers and technology providers can work together internationally to share expertise, drive innovation, and shape more sustainable food systems.
