Dutch Greenhouse Delta Seeds Change in Bangladeshi Horticulture

The Greenhouse Impact Cluster project – a pioneering public-private initiative between Dutch and Bangladeshi partners – has officially launched during the BIDA Investment Summit in Dhaka and the Best of Bangladesh event in Amsterdam. Coordinated by Dutch Greenhouse Delta (DGD), the project represents a significant step towards developing sustainable and resource-efficient horticultural practices in Bangladesh.

At the heart of the initiative is the construction of a mid-tech demonstration greenhouse, to be complemented by a comprehensive training programme. Scheduled for completion later this year at the ACI R&D Centre in Mawna, roughly 60 km north of Dhaka, the facility will function as both a training and demonstration hub, showcasing climate-smart food production techniques.

A Strong Public-Private Partnership

This cross-border collaboration unites expertise from leading Dutch and Bangladeshi organisations. On the Dutch side, the consortium includes AgrowSer VDH Foliekassen BV, Hoogendoorn Growth Management BV, Bayer | De Ruiter Seeds BV, Koppert Biological Systems BV, Lentiz, and DGD. Their Bangladeshi counterparts are Advanced Chemical Industries (ACI) and Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU), which serve as the local knowledge partners. The project is backed by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Dhaka.

A Symbolic Launch with Global Commitment

The project was introduced in Bangladesh during a high-level session at the BIDA Investment Summit on 10 April, attended by Dr Mohammad Ullah Mian, Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture (Bangladesh), H.E. Andre Carstens, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangladesh, Dr F H Ansarey, President of ACI Agribusiness, and Ms Sara van Hoeve, Senior Policy Officer – Economic Affairs & Private Sector Development at the Dutch Embassy in Dhaka.

The Dutch introduction followed on 18 April at the Best of Bangladesh event in Amsterdam, in the presence of H.E. Ambassador Tareque Muhammad, Ambassador of Bangladesh to the Netherlands, and representatives from all project partners. In a symbolic gesture of unity, logos of the participating organisations were placed around a map of Bangladesh, highlighting the collaborative spirit driving this effort in sustainable agriculture.

Catalysing Green Innovation in Emerging Markets

This project forms part of the Dutch government’s multi-year ‘combi-track’ strategy, which aims to stimulate impactful entrepreneurship in emerging markets. Under the Impact Cluster subsidy scheme, the Dutch government supports targeted initiatives that promote sustainable private sector development.

In Bangladesh – a fertile delta region facing the intersecting challenges of urbanisation, climate vulnerability, and rising food demand – the project addresses the urgent need for sustainable, protected horticulture. It aims to boost food security, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve export potential through innovation and international cooperation.

The greenhouse is expected to be operational later this year, with training and knowledge-sharing activities set to follow shortly after.
