Dutch flower bulb industry bodies plan closer collaboration

Dutch based industry bodies for the flower bulb sector KAVB en Anthos will investigate ways to collaborate more closely. The Royal General Bulb Growers’ Association (KAVB) and the Dutch industry body for the Dutch flower bulb and nursery stock sector believe that joining forces is vital in achieving sustainable development goals.

Since many years, breeders, bulb farmers, traders and exporters invest time and money to reduce their impact on the environment.

Closer collaboration will help identifying the steps in the sustainability process that are already made and the ones which are to follow. The combined effect will be much greater than the sum of individual efforts, KAVB and Anthos believe.

Hester Maij, chairman of the KAVB says, “The sector is made up of interdependent groups. Every  partner in the supply chain must take its responsibility and at the same time be willing to look beyond their own farms and work together. For example, the development of new, resilient varieties can only have maximum effect if the trade prioritises the sales of more resistant  varieties.’

KAVB and Anthos in association with CNB and Keukenhof  are currently preparing a sector statement, and six programmes with shared objectives: improving plant health, water, innovation in the labour market, soil, energy and biodiversity.

Mark-Jan Terwindt, managing director of Anthos notes, “The business leaders shared around the table have a clear view of the common challenges ahead. They are convinced they can face them together and are willing to invest in them. A solid foundation has been laid for a sustainable future. We are happy with that. The organisations of KAVB, Anthos, CNB and Keukenhof will now energetically work on the further elaboration and implementation of the programmes.”
