Well-known in the world of horticulture for his high energy and enthusiasm, plant expert, TV presenter and podcaster Michael Perry (better known as Mr Plant Geek) writes a monthly column for FCI focusing on fabulous plants that have caught his attention — and this month, it’s all about LaBella Dahlia Chocolate
Beekenkamp Plants has just released a super tasty new range of Dahlias: LaBella Chocolate – a dark-leaved Dahlia series, which is so rich and stunning, it’s sure to satisfy every gardener’s craving for beauty. With deep, almost black, luxurious foliage and vibrant blooms, this new variety is an awesome new direction for their compact, large blooming genetics.
Just like its name, LaBella Dahlia Chocolate is pure indulgence. The lush leaves provide a striking contrast to the plant’s dazzling double flowers, which feature elegant bicolour tones in captivating contrasts. Each bloom pops against the dramatic backdrop of dark foliage, making this variety a visual treat to instantly elevate any urban space.
When grown to perfection in 14–17 cm (6–8 inch) pots, it makes an excellent impulse purchase for the garden centre. Once consumers get the plants home, they really suit a balcony container or can add a certain drama to your borders, not to mention its use as a cut flower.
Consumers love having shorter dahlias that don’t skimp on flair – and this exciting introduction is designed to deliver just that. It’s the ideal choice whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or a casual plant lover.
LaBella Dahlia Grande Chocolate Rose first wowed visitors at FlowerTrials in June, where it was voted public favourite at Beekenkamp Plants’ Maasdijk site. Its sister variety, Chocolate Amber, came in a close second. Later that month in the UK, the same standout variety went on to win first place in its category at the HTA New Plant Awards 2025, beating over 130 entries.
