Colombian Growers’ Leader Honoured with SAF Hall of Fame Award

Augusto Solano Mejía, President of Asocolflores, has been inducted into the Society of American Florists (SAF) Floriculture Hall of Fame, the highest recognition in the US floral industry. The award was presented during the SAF Phoenix 2025 Annual Convention, held 6–9 August in Phoenix, Arizona.

Solano becomes only the second Colombian to receive this distinction — the first being José (Pepe) M. de la Torre in 2001 — marking a milestone not just for his career but for Colombian floriculture as a whole.

This honour comes as Solano celebrates 25 years at the helm of Asocolflores, during which he has guided the industry through transformative change. Under his leadership, Colombia’s flower industry has expanded its global reach, improved competitiveness, and strengthened its sustainability credentials.

Key achievements include the development of social and environmental programmes such as Florverde Sustainable Flowers, initiatives for worker well-being and gender equity, and a strong push toward environmentally responsible growing and logistics practices. His international advocacy has positioned Flowers of Colombia as a benchmark for quality and sustainability, while also creating new opportunities for growers and exporters in emerging markets.

“Receiving the SAF Floriculture Hall of Fame award at SAF Phoenix 2025 is both a great honour and a humbling moment in my career,” Solano said. “This recognition is not only a personal achievement, but also a testament to the dedication, resilience, and passion of the Colombian floriculture industry—committed to excellence and positioned as a global benchmark.”

The award not only celebrates Solano’s career but also reaffirms the role of Colombian growers as leaders in sustainable, innovative, and competitive global floriculture.
