Brussels’ iconic flower carpet will once again be ‘rolled out’ on the cobblestones of the city’s Grand Place this August.
The Brussels carpet spans an area of 1,600m2 and will be created from almost 600,000 Dahlia and Begonia flowers. Its colourful splendour will reveal itself in all its floral glory between 15-18 August.
The flower carpet in Brussels offers the perfect opportunity for some clever Flemish Dahlia and Begonia marketing. Thanks to a rich tradition of seed selection and corm production, Flanders is the most important producer of tuberous Begonia in the world.
Annually more than 30 million corms are exported to Europe, North America and Japan. This niche cultivation comprises about 80 ha and is concentrated in East Flanders and in the Ghent area.
Seed selection businesses are continually searching for new colours and shapes. The double begonia and hanging varieties are particularly in demand. The immense Belgian flower carpet of tuberous Begonias are the pride of the industry and enjoy international fame.
In flower carpets, the Begonia’s colourful splendour is displayed to its best advantage. The attractive long flowering period (from early summer until the first frost) makes the tuberous Begonia an ideal garden or border plant. It also adds a splash of colour to terraces, balconies and patios.
Now in its 23rd year, Brussels’ flower carpet takes place only once every two years.
