The European Nursery Stock Association (ENA) at this year’s IPM show in Essen announced the Belgian city of Antwerp as the 2025 winner of the European Green Cities Awards. The award honours Antwerp’s large scale city project Zuidpark that saw 8ha of parking lots transform into a dynamic park in the heart of Antwerp.
Now in its 6th year, the Green Cities Europe Award highlights the importance of green infrastructure in creating healthier, more resilient and liveable cities. The award enables cities across Europe to benchmark their performance and understand where improvements can be made. Winners are categorised as gold, silver and bronze across criteria including quality and quantity of greenery, park design, environmental and economic impact, material use and reproducibility.
Antwerp’s award-winning Zuidpark, in the late 19th designed as part of Antwerp’s port expansion, is a shining example of how cities can successfully reclaim car-dominated spaces for people. In 2015, Antwerp revealed an ambitious plan to relocate parking underground and transform the site into a multifunctional green space.
The park combines heritage, ecology and social use, offering diverse atmospheres and spaces that serve residents of all ages. The panel of Green Cities Europe judges stated, “Zuidpark is a strong and forward-looking example of how cities can create high-quality green space while addressing climate challenges. The project stands out for its ecological value, sponge-based water management, ecosystem services and its potential to inspire similar transformations across Europe.”
Commenting on the award Jeroen Pasman, Zuidpark project manager says, “After working on the project for 10 years, it is wonderful to see that the residents have embraced a new park in their lives.”
This year’s competition brought together eight national projects, each reflecting a different approach to urban greening:
Arles (France) and Warsaw (Poland) won silver and bronze respectively.
