AIPH announces City of London Green City Briefings that bring the urgency and opportunity of climate action to the attention of city leaders around the world

LONDON, UK: The International Association of Horticultural Producers, AIPH, in collaboration with the Worshipful Company of Gardeners, is delighted to announce the City of London Green City Briefings.

The City of London Green City Briefings is a series of 8, free-of-charge, one-hour webinars that present compelling evidence and examples of the power of ‘living green’ in delivering multiple solutions to city challenges.

The briefings respond to the City Corporation’s ambitious Climate Action Strategy, which will make the Square Mile net zero carbon-emission by 2040, 10 years earlier than government goals. The City’s governing body will undertake a wide range of actions including creating more space for walking and cycling in the Square Mile, with wider pavements and new parks, and updating planning regulations to encourage more sustainable buildings, creating 800 green jobs.

The Green City Briefings address climate action topics that the City of London Corporation is addressing to enable the city to enhance its sense of place to attract the brightest and the best, and secure the future of the City of London as a world-leading business hub. The challenges that the City of London faces are shared by many cities around the world, and this series of briefings encourages open exchange of ideas and activities that enable global city resilience.

AIPH is the world’s champion for the power of plants. Through this collaborative series of briefings, AIPH furthers their Green City programme, which uses knowledge exchange, advocacy, and networking to increase the quality and quantity of ‘living green’ in urban spaces, and motivates the multifunctional benefits that this delivers to people and the planet.

The Worshipful Company of Gardeners has a long tradition of supporting and encouraging greening in London, with a proven commitment to initiating activities that enable the UK-based livery company to achieve its objective of promoting the art, science and practice of horticulture, with particular reference to supporting the Lord Mayor and the City of London.

“The City of the Future is Green” – this is the first session and is on Tuesday 13th April 2021 at 13.00 BST. All sessions are free to registered participants. Register on the AIPH website for the City of London Green City Briefings

The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman William Russell, who heads the City Corporation, will open the City of London Green City Briefings to share his vision for the city, describing strategies and initiatives to drive and embed positive change.

The second speaker in this session is Sir Roger Gifford, Chairman of the Green Finance Institute. In his presentation, “Green Finance: Hype or Hope”, Sir Roger explores the critical relationship between financial market participants and policymakers in collaborating to co-create solutions.

Following sessions in the City of London Green City Briefings will further develop the theme of cities as dominating climate action, and city leaders as drivers of change, covering other topics that relate to climate action.  The briefings are held monthly from April to December 2021, and the topics address nature-based solutions for water management in cities; how green roofs and walls support city greening; the intersection between built infrastructure, nature, and wellbeing; the policy and practice of urban forests; city biodiversity and global conservation;  and improving quality of life of all ages and sectors. The final briefing, on 7th  December 2021, presents progress of the City of London against its Climate Action Strategy.

All sessions are free to attend. For full details of the sessions and to register, visit the AIPH website City of London Green City Briefings
