PORTLAND, USA: The 2021 Farwest Show, taking place August 18–20, is offering three seminars that focus on climate adaptability, regenerative landscapes, and opportunities to leverage environmentally-friendly landscaping techniques.
These sessions will provide actionable recommendations so that designers, architects, and landscape professionals can strategically change everything from their irrigation plans to inventory options as global conditions break from the norm. All the seminars will be delivered at Farwest, the biggest green industry trade show in the West, held at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon.
- Bess Bronstein, horticultural consultant and ISA-certified arborist, will present her session titled “Changing Times, Changing Gardens” from 9:45–10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, August 18.
- Erik Swartzendruber of the Willamette Valley Regenerative Landscape Coalition will present two sessions on Thursday, August 19; “Regenerative Landscaping” from 9:45–10:45 a.m., and “Eco-Landscaping 101” from 11:45 a.m.–12:15 p.m.
Bronstein’s session will focus on designing and maintaining climate-adapted landscapes. In her 30-year career as a horticultural educator in northern Washington, she has observed how climate change is affecting the health of established landscapes in the Pacific Northwest. Rising temperatures and decreasing rainfall amounts are making plants more susceptible to pest and disease problems. These factors have a compounding effect on plant health, which will have a long-term impact on landscape designers and maintenance professionals. Bronstein will offer advice on plant selection, irrigation, and management for new and established landscapes.
Swartzendruber has worked in landscaping for 18 years and is a founding member of the Willamette Valley Regenerative Landscape Coalition. His first seminar, “Regenerative Landscaping,” will dig into how properly planted and maintained landscapes can go beyond sustainability and actively mitigate the effects of climate change in our environment. Landscapes play a valuable role in ecological function by improving soil quality, feeding pollinators, and sequestering carbon. Swartzendruber will illustrate the best ways to design and maintain landscapes to make the most of their natural regenerative properties.
Swartzendruber’s second seminar is a mini-session at the Solution Center on the trade show floor titled “Eco-landscaping 101.” This session will elaborate on the practical application of regenerative landscaping principles outlined in his first presentation. Areas covered include landscape practices, design strategies, and a big picture look at the importance of plants and landscapes. All Solution Center mini sessions are free to registered Farwest Show attendees and exhibitors.
