The Urban Ecological Systems Directorate, established under the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Parks and Gardens Department, has initiated work focusing on ecological criteria for tree planting, biodiversity, xeriscaping, and wildlife. In the presentation, Raşit will discuss the importance of adopting an organisational structure that values urban ecological systems, the criteria the city prioritises for tree planting alongside wildlife, productive landscapes, and ecological planning units, as well as developments regarding the Tree Master Plan that the city aims to establish.

With a Public Policy background, Stefania has worked for more than a decade for the Italian Ministry of the Environment (IMELS); first posted in Serbia, she was later seconded by IMELS to an international organisation, the Regional Environmental Centre (REC), where she became the Director of the Italian Fund (ITF), targeting specific environmental programs and channelling governmental funds throughout several geographical regions, such as Central Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Turkey, and the MENA region.
In this institutional framework Stefania co-developed the Sustainable Development Academy (SDA) – an educational, capacity building program for senior officials and businesses leaders – and co-established the CEO Platform for Green Growth in the MENA region, a program mobilising actions for green solutions across top-notch businessmen in the Arab region (ceoplatform.rec.org).
On behalf of the Italian Ministry of Environment, Stefania coordinated the bilateral environmental cooperation between Brazil and Italy, setting up the relevant institutional agreements and supervising the Italian Pavilion at United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 2012 (Rio+20) for the Italian delegation.
Dr Rik De Vreese
Dr Rik De Vreese is a Senior Researcher and Team Leader for Urban Forestry at the European Forest Institute and the Project Coordinator for the CLEARING HOUSE Resilience Programme. He is member of the International Steering Group of the European Forum on Urban Forestry (EFUF). His research focusses on the relations between humans and trees, in the urban and peri-urban sphere. More specifically, Dr De Vreese has been involved in research on integrating ecosystem services in decision-making and urban planning, mainly with a transdisciplinary lens.
Raşit Fırat Deniz
Raşit Fırat Deniz is the Chief of Urban Ecosystem and Ecological Planning at the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Urban Ecological Systems Branch Directorate. He obtained his master’s degree in Environmental Sciences from the Institute of Science at Marmara University and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning at Istanbul Technical University. In his professional career, he has worked in turnkey water engineering projects within Urban Wastewater Treatment Plants, Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plants, and Energy Facilities, as well as in reporting for comprehensive sustainable ecology studies. His roles have included developing and maintaining projects such as Sustainable Climate and Energy Action Plans, Zero Waste concepts and waste reduction, network-building with international organizations at the local government level, and initiatives focused on green cities adaptable to climate change.
