Doi Tung Development Project (Royal Project Area)
In 1987, the Princess Mother initiated the Doi Tung Development Project to improve quality of life in the Mae Chan District of Chiang Rai Province.
Phase 1 of the project began with reforestation, including the cultivation of coffee and macadamia crops to boost the economic security of the villagers. Phase 2 focused on improving the self-sufficiency of the locals via production of food and plant-based products. The project is in its final Phase, which centres around sustainability.
Find out more about the project.
In the area is the beautiful Mae Fah Luang Garden. The garden is named for the late Princess Mother and covers 10 hectares with a variety of plants and flowers. It features a tree-top walk, an orchid house, a cactus garden, and a collection of sculptures.

Baan Dam (Black House Museum)
The Baan Dam art museum is spread across 40 different structures, all designed by national artist Thawan Duchanee. The buildings blend traditional Thai architecture with a modern flair and house collections of paintings, sculptures, animal bones, skins, and horns.
Wat Rong Kun (White Temple)
At the end of the 20th century, the original Wat Rong Kun was in disrepair. Chiang Rai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat decided to rebuild the temple from scratch, funding the project with his own money. The now famous White Temple opened to the public 1997. The clever architecture uses whitewashing and transparent mirrored chips to create a porcelain look.
Farewell Dinner
The farewell dinner will be at Ma Long Tur restaurant. The restaurant is renowned for its authentic Thai dishes, each crafted with fresh ingredients and traditional recipes that reflect the rich culinary heritage of the region.
