The Wilanów Palace, together with its garden, is one of the most beautiful places of interest in Poland. The Baroque palace and the meticulously designed surrounding gardens were built for King John III Sobieski (1629-1696) and are filled with Polish as well as European culture. The 45 hectares of Wilanów Park comprise gardens in several styles: a two-level Baroque garden, a neo-Renaissance rose garden, an English landscape park and an English-Chinese landscape park. The Park has a unique microclimate thanks to its natural lake and stream and its man-made pond dating back to King John III’s days.
The trees grown in the Park are mostly local species, such as lime trees (Tilia cordata), maples (Acer platanoides) and ironwood (Carpinus betulus) to name a few. Exotic tree species include ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba), southern catalpas (Catalpa bignonioides) and katsura trees (Cercidiphyllum japonicum). Many of the trees are valuable specimens, with 28 officially listed in the Register of Natural Heritage.
